“Each plant and the landscape that nurtures it are a watercolour waiting to be painted and a story waiting to unfold.”
– Margaret Walsh Best

Margaret Walsh Best is a Canadian artist and art educator. Her enduring love of the natural world—particularly plants and flowers—and her talent as a watercolour painter have won her many awards and seen her exhibit and teach in Canada and internationally.

Artist

Margaret works mainly in watercolour to capture the subtleties of colour, form, and shadow in the landscape and the natural elements within. Her holistic approach combines her artist’s eye with scientific and historical research so that, “by the time I pull out my brushes, I feel like I am painting the portrait of an old friend.”

Art Educator

As an art educator, Margaret is passionate about passing on her own continually evolving skills and techniques. She works with children and adults in schools and in her community, as well as internationally, to foster a love of the natural world through artistic expression. Margaret offers weekly adult classes, as well as workshops on specific themes, throughout the year.

Recognition

Among her many honours, Margaret has been recognized for her artistry and her contribution to the development of art in her home province, Newfoundland and Labrador, with an Honorary Life Membership in the Art Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Margaret’s work can be found at her studio, in private collections around the world, and in the collections of the City of St. John’s and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
